Hello, crafty friends! Welcome to my blog. I am absolutely thrilled to be part of a very special celebration today. We are celebrating Spellbinders’ 23rd Birthday, and what better way to mark this milestone than with a fun, festive blog hop full of inspiration, creativity, and amazing giveaways!

For today’s celebration, I created a dynamic, dimensional Z-Fold Pop-Up Birthday Card featuring some adorable dragons and festive balloons. Let’s dive into how this card came together!

The Z-Fold Base & Background Panels

  • Card Base: Cut a piece of premium white cardstock to 11″ x 4 1/4″.

  • Score at 2 3/4″ and 5 1/2″ to form the Z-fold structure. Fold the 2 3/4″ line as a Mountain fold and the 5 1/2″ line as a Valley fold.

  • The Bottom Strip: Cut another strip of white cardstock to 11″ x 3/4″. Score at the exact same spots (2 3/4″ and 5 1/2″). However, fold this strip in the exact opposite directionβ€”the 2 3/4″ fold becomes a Valley fold, and the 5 1/2″ fold becomes a Mountain fold.

  • Background Ink Blending: Cut one backdrop panel to 5 1/4″ x 4″ and two side panels to 2 1/4″ x 4″. Use a blending brush with blue inks to create a seamless gradient sky, then splatter with white ink for a starry effect.

Assembly: Adhere the ink-blended panels onto the main card base. Next, adhere the 3/4″ folded strip along the bottom of the card, opposite to the base folds, to create the interactive pop-up framework.

Adding the Clouds & Internal Pop-Up Elements

  • Cloud Borders: Die-cut sweet, fluffy clouds using the Spellbinders Color Block Cloudscape Die (Retired) and attach them across the front panels and the bottom strip.

  • Internal Pop-Up Mechanism: To support the floating elements inside, cut a small white cardstock strip measuring 4″ x 3/4″. Score it at 1 1/2″ and 2″, then secure it right in the center fold area of the card.

  • The Birthday Dragon: Die-cut the adorable dragon from the Dancin’ Birthday Dragon Die Set. Secure him right onto the folding corner of the internal pop-up mechanism so he looks like he’s ready to party!

  • Gift with Purchase Bonus: Using this month’s special 23rd-anniversary promotional Party Time Dragon Die (free with purchases of $150+), die-cut the elements using Brush and Tutu cardstock. Add subtle shading with blending brushes for beautiful depth.

Ombre Balloons: Stamp the number balloons from the Number Balloons Cling Rubber Stamp and Die Bundle by Simon Hurley using a light yellow ink and a darker yellow ink for a gorgeous ombre effect, then die-cut them out. For the regular balloons, die-cut them from white cardstock and hand-blend multiple vivid ink colors to make them pop!

The Sentiment: Finish the card by die-cutting the sentiment using the Layered Happy Birthday Etched Dies by Spellbinders Paper Arts. Cut the bold script letters from rich black cardstock and layer them onto the solid white shadow backdrop panel for maximum contrast.
